Mayo Clinic’s Dennis Dahlen: Enabling and Advancing Healthcare in 2026

Financial leadership matters more than ever. Healthcare’s financial leaders are being asked to do more than balance budgets. They are helping organizations navigate unprecedented financial, operational and workforce challenges while doing these three important things well:

  1. Strengthening patient care
  2. Advancing innovation
  3. Building long-term sustainability

“The challenges facing healthcare today require all of us — providers, finance leaders, policymakers and industry partners — to work together to create a more sustainable and accessible healthcare system,” said Mayo Clinic CFO Dennis Dahlen.

As CFO of Mayo Clinic, Dahlen has helped shape financial strategies that support high-quality, patient-centered care while investing in innovation, digital transformation and the organization’s long-term mission. Throughout his career, he has championed collaboration across healthcare and elevated the role of financial leaders in solving some of the industry’s biggest challenges.

“The spreadsheets, forecasts and financial models are important, but they are only tools in service of something larger. Our responsibility is to help create sustainable organizations that can deliver exceptional care today and make it even better for generations to come,” he said.

Dahlen’s philosophies, which you can hear more of on Follow the Money (a podcast collaboration between 4sight Health and Innovaccer), earned Dahlen HFMA’s highest recognition, the Richard L. Clarke Board of Directors Award, honoring lifetime contributions to healthcare finance. The award, established in 1964, reflects HFMA’s highest appreciation for transformative leadership, meaningful action and service to the profession.

Dahlen’s career includes leadership roles at Mayo Clinic, Banner Health and service as HFMA National Chair. “Although the organizations are quite different, both organizations were and are driven by that same stewardship ethos that healthcare finance is ultimately about enabling and advancing care and health,” he said. “Behind every budget, capital investment, reimbursement strategy and financial plan is a patient, a family and a community depending on us to get it right.”
